2011 BMW 128i Coupe, an AW Drivers Log

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: This is a really fun car to drive, and it reinforces the point that you don't need 300 hp or 500 hp to have fun. At just 3,200 pounds, the 230-hp inline-six in this car works hard, but there's plenty of oomph for passing and keeping things interesting. We've had lots of discussions in the past about how expensive the 1-series really is, but here at $32,000, the features and the attitude all seem just about right.

COPY CHIEF WENDY WARREN KEEBLER: These 1-series cars generally leave me wanting a 3-series. The seats are very tight (too narrow for backs and bottoms), and the steering effort is very heavy (as if they're trying to make the car feel more substantial in some fake way).
That said, the shifter is wonderfully smooth and easy to work, and the clutch is nicely progressive. The characteristic BMW inline-six sounds and vibrations are there. The car feels solid, rigid, but the suspension is not what I'd call compliant. There's an edgy feeling to the car that does not match BMW's reputation for agility and comfort. I don't generally like the 1-series look, but this coupe has a cute, clipped, eager, butch appearance that reminds me of a bright little pug dog.
